How Much Does NDIS Support Actually Cost?

Open your NDIS plan and the dollar figure at the top tells you almost nothing about what you’ll pay week to week. That’s the gap this guide closes.

Every price below comes from the NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27, effective 1 July 2026. A standard support worker costs up to $73.58 an hour on a weekday. That climbs to $163.46 on a public holiday. Plan sizes vary enormously, because the NDIA funds assessed need rather than a diagnosis: around 6% of participants hold budgets under $10,000 a year, while nearly one in eleven sits above $250,000.

What Does NDIS Support Cost in 2026-27?

The NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27 sets these costs, not individual providers. A standard support worker costs up to $73.58 an hour on a weekday, rising to $103.54 on a Saturday, $133.50 on a Sunday and $163.46 on a public holiday. Support coordination runs from $80.06 to $190.54 an hour depending on the level, and plan management costs $104.45 a month.

These are ceilings, not fixed prices. Registered providers can’t charge above them for NDIA-managed or plan-managed participants. Plan-managed and self-managed participants can use unregistered providers and sometimes negotiate lower rates, especially for regular, ongoing work.

How Much Do NDIS Support Workers Cost?

Support worker time is where most Core budgets go, so this is the number worth memorising. Weekend and evening loadings add up fast when support falls outside standard hours.

A Saturday shift costs 41% more than the same hour on a Tuesday, and a Sunday shift costs 81% more. Move a non-urgent support to a weekday and you stretch a Core budget further with no loss of service. Personal care, community participation and respite care all carry these loadings, so the timing question is worth asking every time you book.

One useful exception: household tasks don’t work this way. House cleaning sits at a flat $60.10 an hour and yard maintenance at $59.01, with no weekend or evening variants in the schedule at all. Book the cleaner for a Sunday and it costs exactly what a Tuesday costs. Few guides mention this, and it changes how you should sequence a week.

How Much Does the NDIS Pay Support Workers?

This is a different number from what a provider charges, and the gap between them confuses a lot of participants. The $73.58 an hour a provider charges isn’t what lands in a support worker’s pocket. Providers pay workers under the SCHADS Award (MA000100), and base rates sit well below the price ceiling.

The difference covers the provider’s insurance, admin, superannuation, rostering, training and the cost of being available at short notice. It isn’t pure margin, and understanding that saves a lot of unnecessary suspicion.

What Are the NDIS Core Supports Price Limits?

Core is the flexible part of a plan, and most day-to-day spending sits here. The items participants use most:

Core funding covers four sub-categories: assistance with daily life, transport, consumables, and social and community participation. Money moves freely between all four, which is why most participants treat Core as one flexible pool rather than four separate buckets. Physical wellbeing activities and innovative community participation both draw from this budget, so shifting funds between them mid-plan is allowed.

Is NDIS Pricing Different in Brisbane?

No. The NDIA sets price limits by remoteness classification (MMM 1 to 5), not by city. Brisbane and its outer suburbs sit in the standard national pricing band, the same as Sydney or Melbourne. Remote and very remote loadings, roughly 1.4 and 1.5 times the standard rate, apply only in NDIA-classified remote areas, which greater Brisbane isn’t.

What differs locally is provider availability and travel time, not the price ceiling. A provider already working across your suburb can roster more consistently than one stretching to reach you, and consistency affects your experience far more than any regional price variation. How Does an NDIS Plan Budget Work?

An NDIS plan splits funding into three budgets, and each one behaves differently.

Core money moves freely between its own sub-categories. Capacity Building doesn’t work that way: you can’t spend occupational therapy funding on support coordination, even when the therapy budget goes untouched. Capital is the strictest of the three. Money allocated for a wheelchair stays allocated for a wheelchair.

The spread across the scheme is wider than most people expect. NDIA figures as at 31 March 2026 show 14.7% of participants hold annualised committed supports between $15,001 and $20,000, the single largest band, while 17.0% sit between $50,001 and $100,000 and 8.7% hold more than $250,000. A Worked Example: One Week of NDIS Support

Numbers are easier to picture with a scenario. Here’s an illustrative weekday-only week for a participant using household tasks and community participation, priced at 2026-27 rates.

This is illustrative only, built from public 2026-27 price limits. It isn’t a quote. Move those four community participation hours to a Saturday and the line climbs from $294.32 to $414.16, pushing the week to $594.46 for identical support. Same hours, same worker, roughly $120 more, purely on timing. That’s the clearest lever most participants have over their own spending.

How Can You Make Your NDIS Budget Go Further?

Four habits protect a Core budget from running out before the plan does.

1. Book non-urgent support on weekdays. A Saturday costs 41% more than a Tuesday for the same task, and a Sunday costs 81% more. Household tasks are the exception, since they sit on a flat rate.
2. Track spending monthly, not at review time. Most plan managers offer a live portal. Self-managed participants can keep a simple spreadsheet with the line item code, date and amount.
3. Use Core flexibility deliberately. Unspent transport funding can move to support worker hours within Core, though Capacity Building can’t cross into Core at all.
4. Check what your provider claims, and why. Match the line item code on every invoice against the price limit for that support.
